What Is The Secret To A Successful Family?

Once, an old man visited his old friend after a long span of time. He was greeted at the door by his friend's son, who led him inside to the living room. When the family members came to know that an old friend of the head of the family had come to visit, all of them came to greet him and touched his feet. He was served refreshments with great love and care. Seeing all this, tears welled up in his eyes. When his friend asked the reason for these tears, he told him that both his sons with their families lived far away from him. He was overwhelmed by the love and affection seen in the family of his friend and then asked him what the secret of his family's togetherness was.

Every person would like to have such a family. But how can this be achieved? First we have to understand the meaning of family. Our sages and scriptures conceptualized this institution of a family. Man is a social being and humanity thrives based on the feelings of togetherness, of serving each other, of loving one another and of taking care of each other's needs. If mutual understanding and a feeling of duty exist amongst its members, one can be rest assured that not only will the family be successful, but the virtues will help build a stronger society and nation which are after all made up of families. In other words, a family is the classroom where the members learn lessons of how to become responsible citizens of the society.

In the Indian culture, when two people marry, they take vows to serve each other, support each other and fulfill their responsibilities. A couple's responsibility is not just to produce children. Rather, it is to ensure that three generations stay together. Our rishis had a mind-blowing foresight as the benefits of three generations under one roof are immense! The grandparents, with their years of experience and wisdom, ensure that values and principles are passed on to their children and grandchildren. The children assume the responsibility of taking care of the weak and old parents. The grandchildren in turn, are expected to be respectful to their elders and learn from their wisdom and experience. Thus, while the younger generations take care of the older generations, the old act as guides and encourage the young to lead a life of duties. Any family in which all members perform their duties will succeed in all spheres domestic, academic and economic.

Even as we do our duties, it is important that we never lose our affection for one another in the family, which is why family picnics, family functions, and celebration of festivals with the entire family are very important.

While this was how families lived traditionally, today the institution of the family faces many challenges. This is primarily because of the onslaught of Western thought and Western way of living. In the West, individual freedom is the way of life. Even though this has resulted in great individual achievements, it is at a very high cost.

In pursuit of personal happiness and freedom, family responsibilities have been neglected. The old aged have been thrown in nursing homes and the young left to babysitters and day care centers. When children will be devoid of proper guidance and the old of due care, then of course families will break apart.

Sadly, the same trend is rapidly picking up in India. Although individual freedom and achievements do bring us temporary and dazzling awards, we tend to forget the biggest truth: our children observe everything we do. Today we are neglecting OUR parents. Won't they also neglect us when we grow old? We do not listen to our parents. Won't our children do the same in the future when we try to advise them? If our parents feel lonely because we have left them alone, won't we face the same predicament tomorrow?

We very well know that since our parents have raised us from early childhood and taken care of our needs, there is no one who is a better well-wisher for us then them. Wouldn't we be better off living with them, taking their advice and learning from their experiences?

We keep complaining that society is progressively deteriorating. It is not the society; it is those families that make up society which are deteriorating. Once the family system breaks apart then there will be a 'domino effect' on the society and nation. So next time, don't complain about our society or nation. Strengthen your family by fulfilling your responsibilities and the nation will follow. The most effective and practical way to achieve this is to bring and keep three generations under one roof and let each play its respective role properly.

Maintaining a Joint Family- Its Necessity Today

The age of the joint family has more or less gone, and in its place has come the nuclear family. There used to be one large family, with parents and their children living together and then subsequent generations marrying and raising their next generation under the same roof to create one huge joint family. However, this has been rendered thoroughly unfeasible and impractical in the modern milieu. The breakdown of the traditional social system wherein one's profession generally was chosen based on factors of caste or class is a prime contributing factor. Modern economic life has spawned innumerable careers and specializations and the pursuit of individual careers often leads to sons leaving their parental home. Moreover, the phenomenon of brothers living together after their marriages, forming an extended joint family is also becoming rare. We are thus witness to the proliferation of divided families and in the process, a dissipation of the unified strength, energy and creativity of both individuals and society.

The problem does not simply remain confined to the breakdown of joint families. In this process, families and societies also witness the unfortunate spectacle of egoistic tendencies rising to the fore to dominate mutual relationships. While respect for elders and unquestioned obedience of their word was the norm in earlier times, disrespect of the older generation has assumed the status of fashion today, often worn as a badge of one's distinct identity. This is the result of individual egos that have been pampered beyond measure and have not been tempered by familial discipline and upbringing. The resultant social chaos is but one manifestation of this.

What can be done to arrest this trend, which is leading to social and national in-cohesiveness and alienation? We must recognise that the automatic resurrection of the earlier joint family is not a feasible project, at least in the immediate term. However, Indian tradition offers the way out of this social chaos. The Ramayana states: Guru Pita Matu Bandhu Pati Deva, Sab Mohi Kahen Jaanain Dridh Seva. In other words, we must treat our teacher (guru), father, mother, elder brother and husband(s) as the Divine Himself and be ever ready to serve them with faith and devotion.

Why should we do so, one may ask. It is therefore necessary to manifest the practical aspects of the message contained in the Chaupai. This will bring out the virtues of an integrated family and its inherent advantages compared to a separate and disparate family. The advice to consider one's elders as 'Deva' ordinarily meaning divine of God, is actually a way to inculcate a respectful outlook towards fellow human beings. After all, every individual desires to be respected and looked up to. This is possible only if this outlook is developed at an early age, when the sublime ego can be trained. Respect for elders, especially, parent, teacher and husband forms the touchstone of this particular aspect.

'Seva' meaning serving others, is another aspect that needs to be understood in a wider context. Contrary to the notions generated, 'seva' is actually the training ground in the family for building a positive attitude and outlook. 'Seva' apart from its mundane inference of serving others, is actually an investment by every individual in the family for every other. It is an investment of time, effort and financial resources to inculcate discipline, build relationships, develop positive virtues and nurture a long-term goodwill between parents and children, teachers and students, and between siblings, so that its benefits can be enjoyed over generations. These are possible only in a family that is blessed with integrity and closely-knit bonds. They are not obstacles to individual success but actually enhance the individual's worth and make him a more balanced person. The essence of this mantra is taming one's ego for the sake of the greater benefit and living for each other in family. It is also the ideal way to avoid so many problems today.

Therefore, a joint family is a much better breeding ground for us. The benefits are immense, and it gives us an opportunity to give back to our family what we have taken from it: a satisfaction that one must have before leaving this earth.

Determining Compatibility In Marriage- Mixing the old with the new

In this age of nuclear families, the question of selecting an appropriate partner and sustaining a marriage has assumed increased significance. The choice of a marriage partner forms the crux of the problem, as it involves a choice that will alter our future lives, our future family and indeed, the future pattern of society.

The permanency of the institution of marriage was not even in question, until just a few decades ago. The phenomenon of living in closed societies, characterized by low mobility ensured that marriages took place within the ambit of the community itself, or neighboring communities. One unique feature of marriages of this nature was that stakeholders in a successful and enduring marriage were not limited to just one family, but were spread over the community, as communities generally lived together. Early marriages were much the norm. Therefore, compatibility was not a great problem, as it automatically developed in young age. The supporting family and community structures were also of immense help in sustaining the newly formed relation of wedlock. Focus was more on filial duties and functionality, rather than the desires of carnal gratification.

The Changed Milieu

We have now entered a phase where the age at which we marry is gradually increasing with each generation. The modern paradigm of living, preferences of profession, and increased importance accorded to the satisfaction of individual desires have played their part in bringing this change. In the changed milieu, the focus is more on aspects of compatibility and the likelihood of happiness and success in one's marriage. The issue of choosing one's life partner has therefore assumed more importance. What was once an automatic and relatively simple process has now become more difficult and complex.

However, there is still a general consensus that marriage is very important for the human society. Actually now people are becoming more educated and thoughtful and are making more proactive choices, at both the individual and family levels regarding marriage. We must look into ways and means of ensuring the success of marriage in terms of longevity, happiness and functionality. Since the issue of compatibility has come to occupy a near-decisive role in the choice of one's life partner, it is only prudent that we examine systems that are supposedly capable of ascertaining the compatibility of a life partner.

How does one select an appropriate marriage partner? There are various methods that people use because people wish to be certain that their life partner will be compatible and the marriage will have increased chances of resulting in happiness and longevity. Let us therefore examine what would be the best approach to select a life partner, one that would work effectively in today's times and changed needs.

The Process of Selection in Earlier Times

As we have briefly mentioned, in an earlier age, the factors of religion, caste, socio-economic background and the family itself occupied the topmost rungs of priority. Individual achievements were often not manifest at the time of marriage. Next came the role of astrology, by way of horoscope matching. This was employed and continues to be in vogue even today to ascertain the longevity of the married life of the couple, their ability to bear children and their bhaagya (luck). Marriages, thus, were simple affairs. If the two families agreed and if the children appeared reasonably compatible in physical attributes of height, shape and other gross features, the marriage was fixed. This is broadly the concept of an 'arranged' marriage - marriage with thought, analysis and plan. Here, the respective family backgrounds were analyzed, while the individuals too went through the process of family screening, thus helping achieve a balance between the needs of the individual and the system.

Today's Approaches and Pitfalls

We have now moved into an age where society has undergone a drastic change. The issues of education and career have assumed a centre-stage in life. Economic achievements have grown in importance and the age of marriage is getting more delayed. Naturally, we are forced to introduce more advanced and refined methods of testing the question of marriage compatibility.

Today boys and girls themselves, are assuming a more prominent role in testing compatibility. We see a reverse process of the concerned individuals going back to their parents, either to seek advice, or simply to ask for their blessings, their individual choices already having being made. The question that naturally springs to mind is: how do individuals, without the depth of knowledge and wisdom that only age and experience bring, go about testing the compatibility of each other, especially in such a crucial decision?

Undoubtedly, the phenomena of physical attraction and emotional compatibility do hold some importance. But the question still remains as to how young individuals can delve deeper to determine certain basic virtues, which test one's integrity, caringness and principles, and importantly, the potential reactions of each other in times of stress?

The human mind is composed of both the conscious and the sub-conscious sub-parts. Of these, the sub-conscious part is initially an unknown entity and is manifest only gradually over a period of time, much after the age of marriage has passed. Therefore, even though individuals may make the best efforts to know each other, many aspects of human behaviour and their responses remain untested. It is thus, not uncommon to find that people who reckoned themselves to be compatible, based on a process of dating and courtship, often end up realising that their analysis was incorrect. The act of meeting each other, getting to know each other and discussing a few mundane issues in no way guarantees that one's compatibility has been tested.

Let us for a moment proceed with this assumption that this process of dating and courtship ensures the likelihood of compatibility and happiness in the first few years of life, which could cement the mutual relationship. But now we should examine the side effects of such an approach. In case the early dating and courtship does not culminate in marriage, it will undoubtedly leave certain imprints upon the mind that one has to deal with throughout life. When one carries the imprints of such previous relationships and marries someone else, such imprints are seldom erased and a tendency to compare and contrast comes up. Many times, these stored memories create problems of unforeseen nature in the future.

Another issue is that of natural incompatibility that arises over a period of time. Defeat, failure depression and anxiety are a part of everyone's life, tending to make us less compatible even with our own selves, what to speak of others. If a marriage was based solely on the foundation of perfection and compatibility, married partners would remain unprepared to deal with these unescapable issues. In such an eventuality, we are left wanting mentally, emotionally and intellectually to deal with incompatibility and still support each other for those parts of our lives that make us incompatible.

These are the problems associated with the method of exposure, testing or going through this process of trying out to "find out what works." In other words, what works, doesn't work as well, and moreover has significant side effects which are not to be taken lightly or trifled with. Thus, while we are trying to meet the individual needs of more mature people, in order to dispel their individual apprehensions, we certainly need to be aware of these side-effects and moderate our approach to this issue. We should not unnecessarily prolong the age of marriage, nor the duration, nature and complexity of dating and courtship, in order for a meeting of minds to materialise. We have to be very serious about the potential side effects to both the individuals and others. The multiplication of these side effects in society makes society as a whole an unhealthy entity. We also lose social support. We are thereby deprived of the valuable support of family and society, whether through standards, shame or peer pressure, especially at times when we are under stress. At such times, we find ourselves unable to resolve differences that arise in every marriage.

Combining the Old and New

Therefore, we should mix and combine various approaches. The old approach screened compatibility through the laser filters of longevity, scrutinising family and religious backgrounds and other similarities that would reduce stress. This approach is of immense help in addressing likely differences. Only then should we look at the issue of dating and courtship, and limit its role, keeping certain objectives in mind. It certainly should not be treated as a fun pastime, but must be approached with the mindset of serious business. If we adopt this approach, we can meet our objectives with minimal side effects, minimum injury to ourselves and others involved with us, and also preserve the health of society, as far as family and marriage are concerned.

The Role of A True Teacher

We see that recently the practice of children going for special tuitions has become quite common। These tuitions and tutors are engaged apart from students' regular school curricula। The purpose of a teacher is not to simply teach the subject matter। Most children are able to read or understand. Teachers must devote more effort to understand why students actually study and aid them in developing a passion for the subjects they study. When teachers help students develop this, students can become less dependent on the theoretical knowledge given directly by teachers and thus be more free to use the energy of their passion for a deeper comprehension of the subjects they study.

This brings us to the question what is the actual role of a teacher? Is it merely imparting the theoretical knowledge of the subjects taught, or is a comprehensive approach called for? This question has become so significant today because students are being churned out en masse in today's educational system। While the number of schools and colleges is rising day by day, the quality of education is gradually sinking। Added to this is the number of private coaching classes mushrooming by the day, with both parents and children thronging to these institutions. Apparently, this practice is for improving the grades of children and of course, trying to forge ahead in the rat race for a successful career, profession and material acquisitions. But is the proliferation of such tutors and teaching institutions enabling the system of education to produce the right minds and intellect that are expected to take over the reins of society? Or are we mass-producing a truncated product, one that superficially meets the demands of education, but fails to fulfill its actual role?

It is very easy to blame the society for the ills of the educational system। Blaming the present-day educational institutions and teachers only obscures the fundamental problem - that we ourselves have lost focus of what the actual role of a teacher ought to be। It is this loss of focus that is responsible for the proliferation of numbers of tutors and coaches, while true teachers are becoming an increasingly rare species. We need to ask ourselves what is the actual role of a teacher, which is quite distinct from that of a coach or mentor? What makes a teacher a real guru? A quite practical approach, one that I have personally tested and experienced positive results with is to have the teacher spend about half the allotted time with the student in identifying his dream or passion and discussing it, and Then devote the rest of the time for actual teaching of the subject at hand. children, on their part, should be encouraged to read the subject matter and write down the questions the're not clear about. This helps students develop interest in the subject. Once the child develops a genuine, passionate interest in his desired subject, regular studies are more than adequate to propel him towards a better performance in that subject or career. Then he won't need a tutor twelve months of the calendar.

The current system of tuitions basically makes our children weak and dependent. in no way does it create in students a genuine interest in the subject matter, or make them aware of the need to develop a true passion for the subject. teachers themselves need to grasp This truth and develop This orientation, in order to become gurus in the true sense. Else, the remain only coaches and mentors. This is the fundamental difference between true teachers and simple mentors.

Why Should I Invest My Time In The Family Instead Of Doing What I Like?

As long as we 'feel' we are sacrificing our likes or our passion for our family needs, we will stay unhappy. So I say, merge the two! Why not develop passion in doing our duties towards the family? This combines the needs of the family and that of the individual leading to better outcomes for both.

It is indeed wonderful to express one's natural passion। This is what modern life is all about. One finds passion for studies, sports, music, career and various activities. Individuals express this passion and achieve great heights and that is how the world is progressing. But we also need to pause and look at one fact. Very often, this passion consumes all of our time as we pursue individual success and happiness. This passionate pursuit of personal success often breaks apart the family. Family structures and traditions, that have sustained themselves for ages, are now becoming victims of this individual pursuit of success. We must not lose sight of the fact that there are people in our society who are not as competent or capable as others. Moreover, even the able people, at some stage of their lives will pass through periods of inability, or disability. At such times, one is not capable of expressing one's passion and needs to be taken care of. The able therefore, have a duty towards the unable, or disabled.

Such feeling of duty can be developed only by binding individuals in some kind of family or social system। Otherwise, we will end up dividing society into the able and the disable. We will also lose the insurance for disability for self in times of distress, which will visit almost every one of us. Let us not forget that a significant part of our lives will be affected by incompetence and disability, whether it may be due to old age, sickness or injury, loneliness, marital discord, or other disturbances.

The family and social system were designed to integrate the able and not so able in a loving and affectionate environment। The redirection of passion towards family and duty, thus, is buying ourselves social insurance for difficult times. The basic conflict of passion for activity and passion for duty can be resolved more easily when viewed through this lens. It is natural that the passion for one's individual excellence is a more powerful driver. But if passion for duty can evolve, then one's individual activity becomes secondary. The younger generation views this as a demand of sacrifice of their legitimate pursuit of excellence in their careers, and is not easily willing to subscribe to the idea that dividing their passion between their individual choice of activity and their filial duty towards their parents and families is easily achievable or even worth the attempt. There is an apprehension that this way, they might end up losing on both fronts.

We have to clearly answer and set at rest these apprehensions। After all, in today's highly competitive world, no one wants to lose out. But the young must realize that investing time in directing their passion towards duty is just like investing money in an insurance that will safeguard them when they need it most, i.e. during the later stages in life. We are aware that we will be unable to make money in old age and therefore set aside a portion of our earnings in stocks, savings and insurance. But, we need both money as well as emotional relationships at that stage. Emotions, unlike monetary insurance policies, are not available for sale. This has to be developed as an asset as a family member and a socially responsible individual. If all our time is consumed by our passionate pursuits or ambition, there will be no time for investing in the social relationships needed later.

Today's youth is intelligent enough to invest in the future. It is just that they need to be made aware of the importance of investing in social relationships, apart from material investments. A reorientation of one's passion towards family duty and respect for the elder generation has to be developed from a very early age. Failure to do so will certainly invite loneliness at one's old age, which further brings sickness and stress. Although it appears to be an investment on the utility front, at a deeper level, this emotional investment is actually the continuity of social systems, of purity of relationships, of life and creation. Of course, the question of duty towards our parents in their old age is paramount, but even from a purely personal perspective, the investing of one's emotions in duty towards them is a wise policy. We are investing in the preservation of the systems and traditions that have contributed to bring us to this level. A family and its traditions are like an emotional banking system that needs to be maintained in a healthy shape, so that future generations may continue to draw their sustenance from them. The highly evolved Vedic civilisation of India has developed these concepts and traditions to the most ennobling level.

Importance of Positive Education

How to Develop such Education

The present age is being celebrated as the Age of Knowledge and Information. The revolutionary changes in Information Technology, the advent of the Internet and the Web, Cyber-technology and path-breaking innovations in telecommunication, in which India has played a pioneering role, lend credence to this categorisation of our present age. It would indeed seem that the present times are witnessing an explosion of education, with many new and diverse fields of education proliferating across academia.

While one cannot deny the quantitative strides of educational curricula, it is an altogether matter when it comes to the quality of education being dispersed. While we have many renowned universities, colleges and schools to cater to the needs of a vast number of students, the system of education and its content are increasingly a matter of concern. Though our country produces the maximum number of graduates in the world, very few of them can be said to be worthy of dealing with the problems of today's world in any worthwhile way. Put in a nutshell, this is the outcome of a highly negative system of education.

Education really speaking begins at home. Children learn to read at a very early age. In fact, this is a habit that must be inculcated in them at the earliest; the onus for doing do rests on parents. The unfortunate fallout of a fast-paced and modern lifestyle, especially the urban lifestyle is that children have been losing the habit of reading, thanks in no small measure to the onslaught of visual forms of entertainment, particularly the multitude of television channels and multimedia, Internet-based entertainment that offers a direct sensual connect.

This form of entertainment is directly responsible for making the mind restless, and is truer of the minds of children and the young, which are extremely sensitive and impressionable, especially to negative content and messages, which are always packaged in an attractive manner. Since this type of content is flashy and momentary by its very nature, it results in children seeing things practically at the speed of light. Naturally, the scope for any original thinking to germinate, sustain and further develop is practically nil. Moreover, modern entertainment is practically overwhelmed by debilitating forces like sex, violence and catering to the baser instincts of the human mind. The most vulnerable victims are naturally children, with tendencies of disobedience and aggression taking root at a very early age. Social research has confirmed this through many studies and analyses. We are therefore confronted with a very critical situation of the modern education system being unable to find an adequate antidote to this growing phenomenon. Equally, parents and children alike are extremely concerned about their future, but do not know what the future holds in store for them, as they are clearly unable to visualize what is that they want, other than material aggrandizement. One cannot deny that negative entertainment plays a vital role in bringing about this state of affairs.

Brahmacharj Brat Sanjam Nana, Dheeraj Dharam Gyan Bigyana
Sadachar jap jog biraga, sabhay bibek kataku sabu bhaga

The above Chaupai of the Tulsi Ramcharitmanas is a beautiful evocation of the desirable qualities of a student. Great memory, a stable and concentrated mind ultimately lead to the development of free thinking, guided by truth and positive knowledge called Dharma. However, these are not the products of chance, accident or mere desire, but require a sustained process, one we can aptly refer to as positive education.

Ancient India had its gurukul system of education wherein the student had to spend his entire learning life in the abode of his teacher, under his strict eye. This life of iron discipline might appear rigid and outmoded in the context of today's times, but had several positive attributes, chief among which was the inculcation of positive habits and discipline at a very early age, and the training of the young mind according to one's natural aptitude. Not surprisingly, this system of education, which had its roots in rigorous learning by rote produced students who were thorough in their fields of study and were generally to face the world by the time they stepped into adulthood. Though the resuscitation of the gurukul tradition is by no means easy in the present context, society clearly needs to refocus its attention and energies towards the reconstruction of its education system, in order to produce a healthy and sustainable society.

The process has to begin at home, by sowing the reading habit at an early age. It is the responsibility of parents to see that their children are provided with healthy reading material that stimulates the mind and releasers its creative potential. School curricula have to be of course, reoriented to include logical approaches to problem-solving and also positive discipline among students. Let us keep in mind the fact that the wonderful discoveries of science and technology and its benefits are not the outcome of mere luck, but the scientific applications of meditative and focused minds. One's student life is a precious period where all physical and mental energies must be focused upon and devoted to the pursuit of knowledge, which alone can deliver success in life. What has been discovered by the West years after the Renaissance had been contemplated upon by our rishis and munis ages ago after rigorous penance, meditation and analysis. Positive education also demands patience, which has to be imparted by parents and teachers. More over, education, in order to serve its purpose must focus on practices and courses that can promote these qualities in students. Thus, teachers and parents have a special responsibility to bring home the truth to their children and see that they imbibe the qualities of patience, reading (and study) and analysis. The simplest pathway to achieving this goal is through positive actions as well as practical demonstration for children.

Can Generation Gap be Reduced?

Change is always the law of NATURE. The 21st Century has witnessed unprecedented material progress which has brought changes in the thought process. This has led to a difference of opinion between generations leading a widening generation gap. Earlier this 'gap' was visible after a period of 50 years, but today's speed has brought this gap down to 10-15 years. While we can't stop the material progress, we can take some precautionary measures to avoid the side effects and keep our families together.

Let us examine the generations. We have three generations before us. Those who are above above 65 years, having experience of both Pre-independence India and India of today. Then we have those who are about 45 years of age currently pursuing a business and who have played a major role in the economic progress of the late 20th and early 21st century. Finally we have to days youth, having a 'different' view towards life. According to them, talking about principle centered life is a silly question. Making money and enjoying life is the only aim before them.

Then what is the solution? Instead of blaming each other we should try to understand the differences. Continuous dialogue between a father and son is the best solution to this problem. If they discuss a problem mutually, they will find a solution. One in which there will be no gap, neither of generation or of thoughts.

Process of dialogue is always beneficial. If a father finds that his son is not on the right track, it is his responsibility to convince his son by giving examples from his life. On the other hand, the son must also take advantage of his father's experience. Granted tat the father might not be as educated as his son, but the son should value the wisdom of experiences above his bookish knowledge. This outlook will automatically reduce the gap to a great extent.

If we all sit back and examine our past, we will see that our parents are our best well-wishers because the have absolutely no conflict of interest. In fact, their interest is our welfare. Therefore, we should go out of the way and seek their advice, making them an important part of all of our decisions. We might feel we have enough expertise to make a decision, but that critical power of differentiation which is required at crucial times only comes from the wisdom of experience without which we will suffer in one decision or the other.

It is re-iterated once again, having proper dialogue in between the family members is the only solution to this problem. Since family problems generate within the family, try to solve them with the consultation of Grand Parents and Parents. If you wish to reduce the gap, cut short the distance and come towards each other as togetherness is the strength for success.
